Dear Community member,
The Center is excited to announce our 2021 Season of Pride fundraiser. The Pride Season fundraiser begins on June 1st and ends September 30, 2021.
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in January 2021, the Center took a brave step to launch Oakland's first all-inclusive LGBTQ centered wellness clinic. Supported with a contract from the California Department of Public Health - Office of AIDS and grants from Gilead and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. The Center has also partnered with LifeLong Medical Care, SFAF, and the Highland Hospital Residency program to offer clinic clients access to sexual orientation and gender affirming primary care, to include sexual health services and treatment.
To honor our clinic’s namesake, Oakland native and Major League Baseball's first out gay player Glenn Burke, our Season of Pride fundraiser has a baseball theme. Glenn Burke was unapologetically gay, is credited with creating the “high-five” in sports and was summarily blackballed from baseball. He died here in the East Bay in 1995 of AIDS related complications.
We are asking for your bold support during this critical moment of the Center’s growth. Our goal is to raise $200,000 by September 30, 2021 to help support the operations of our new wellness clinic. The Oakland LGBTQ Community Center is working in collaboration with a variety of community-based organizations in order to provide comprehensive LGBTQ and people of color-centered services for the first time in Oakland's history.
You can help us reach or exceed our goal by choosing a donation level that will help us hit the ball right out of the park!
