Dear Community member,
The Center is excited to announce our 2020 Season of Giving fundraiser for the holiday season. The Center's Season of Giving fundraiser begins on November 1st and ends December 31, 2020.
At a time of heightened risks to the livelihood and health of LGBTQ people, we are thrilled to be opening a new LGBTQ centered wellness clinic to serve our community here in Oakland.
Initially, the Glenn Burke Wellness clinic will provide sexual health services to help prevent, treat, and care for individuals at risk for or living with HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STI’s). Our long-term goal is to offer services that meet the unique primary medical care needs of Oakland's LGBTQ community.
In 1995, Alameda County declared a state of emergency due to the disproportionately high rates of HIV in the Black community. Sadly, that state of emergency is still in place. According to the Center’s for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), if current trends persist, 1 in 2 Black and 1 in 4 Latino/x gay, bisexual and transgender individuals, will become HIV positive in their lifetimes. Our new LGBTQ centered clinic will work in collaboration with the state of California Department of Public Health (CADPH-OA) and other CBO’s to help our city and county stop the spread of HIV, while providing care to those who are living with the HIV virus.
To honor our clinic’s namesake, Oakland native and Major League Baseball's first out gay player Glenn Burke, our Season of Giving fundraiser has a baseball theme. Glenn was unapologetically gay, is credited with creating the “high-five” in sports and was summarily blackballed from baseball. He died here in the East Bay in 1995 of AIDS related complications.
We are asking for your bold support during this critical moment of the Center’s growth. Our goal is to raise $200,000 through Dec. 31st to help support our operations in order to pay the rent and keep the lights on for our youth program, rental and emergency housing assistance program, food pantry program, transgender services fund, HIV wellness and prevention services program, as well as our new wellness clinic. The Oakland LGBTQ Community Center is working in collaboration with a variety of community-based organizations in order to provide comprehensive LGBTQ and people of color-centered services for the first time in Oakland's history.
You can help us reach or exceed our goal by choosing a donation level that will help us hit the ball right out of the park!
